2023 Mercedes-AMG G63 4 × 4² Portal is here to conquer all terrain including Excel

Mercedes-AMG has released the first official photo of the new G63 4 × 4² which combines the performance of a twin-turbocharged V8 engine with portal excel and huge ground clearance. Mercedes says it’s the “end of its kind”, probably referring to the ICE version.

The model was published on Mercedes’ G-Class private lounge website. In addition to the photos, we have a video with Tony Mantel, G-Class’s head of product management, showing us the impressive style of the last 4 × 4².

The G-Wagon has been upgraded with a wide Fender add-on, a set of giant 22-inch wheels with grippy tires, roof-mounted LEDs, a special green color and lots of carbon fiber accents all around. , With a full size extra cover. Climb inside the cabin and you’ll find more carbon fiber, a special startup screen in the digital cockpit, ambient lighting, a digital interior mirror, leather-wrapped sports seat and steering wheel.

A big boost in strength over its predecessor

The big news is that under the bonnet, where we got AMG’s latest twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that produces 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque, just like the regular G63, Its a significant improvement over the older model with 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet. Mercedes did not release performance figures but obviously due to poor aerodynamics, huge wheels and increased weight do not expect it to match the “regular” G63. Note that this is not the only AMG-powered G-Class with Portal Excel, as this title goes to the limited production pre-genre Mercedes-AMG G63 6 × 6.

Presumably, the G63 4 × 4² is the most capable variant of the current G-Wagen, with advanced off-road certification compared to the non-“Square” model. The suspension is independent and has a signature portal axle, the approach angle is 45 degrees cold, the ground clearance is increased to 13.8 inches (351 mm) and the ability to go through 35.8 inches (910 mm) deep water. While impressive to say the least, these figures are a bit worse than the previous generation of the G550 4 × 4². However, we are sure that none of the owners will notice any difference as it is very difficult for this off-road animal to come close to the border.

Mercedes will announce the detailed specification of the model later. The same goes for price and availability, Mercedes added, adding that the G63 4 × 4² will be available for a limited time, which will encourage G-Wagen collectors to work faster. In addition to the Square version, Mercedes is also working on the Facelifted G-Class and of course the fully electric EQG.
