Police in the state of Western Australia have just taken delivery of a new Hyundai Ionic 5 and Toyota Mirai. The two will be extensively tested to see if they are ready for the frontline policing application.
Both vehicles are equipped with all the necessary lights, sirens, WA Police Force branding and police radios. The Ioniq 5 will be tested at the State Traffic Police Station, as well as stations in the Midland, Rockingham, Geraldton and Bunbury area. Mirai will be tested around the Fremantle district.
“The WA Police Force has begun research and testing of ‘green’ vehicles that may be suitable for operational policing,” Assistant Commissioner of Police Alan Adams said in a statement. “Toyota and Hyundai have kindly provided vehicles to the WA police force for the purpose of a long-term full operational trial.”

Electric and hydrogen vehicles must satisfy a rigorous testing process if they wish to proceed with operational work. It is understood that the Ioniq 5 could be considered a potential Class 1 police vehicle that would make it suitable for highway patrol duties.
Adams added, “We’re working hard to make those cars on the road more frequent.” “So, of course, the growing effort to introduce electric vehicles in the fleet is of great value to the community. (But) the purpose of the vehicles being introduced during this trial is to demonstrate how well they operate with the strictness of operational policing. “
The Western Australian police force includes a plethora of vehicles, including the Kia Stinger, Chrysler 300, BMW 5-Series, BMW X5, Skoda Superb and even the Toyota Land Cruiser 78 Series used in remote areas of the state.
