Toyota has unveiled a facelifted range of EU-spec Corolla following the facelift of the US-spec model. European models benefit from Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system, while acquiring new technology inside the cabin and making light visual changes to keep it fresh four years after the 12th-generation debut.
While more automakers have joined the trend of electrification, the Honda Civic remains the only complete hybrid in the Corolla C-segment, along with the HIV, as most competitors are offered light-hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains. Previously available petrol-only options have been discontinued from the Corolla range, resulting in a hybrid-only lineup since the hardcore GR Corolla Hot Hatch is not available in Europe.

Faster and cleaner than before
The new self-charging hybrid system improves the same recipe with more power and improved performance. The facelifted model is available with 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter engines, exclusively available in FWD flavor. The redesigned Power Control Unit (PCU) and Transaxel electric motor, combined with smaller and more powerful lithium-ion batteries, reduced the weight of the hybrid powertrain to 18 kg (40 lb) depending on the variant.
In terms of power, the 1.8-liter hybrid produces 138 hp (104 kW / 140 PS) which represents an increase of 18 hp (13 kW / 18 PS) compared to the outgoing model. Thus, the facelifted entry-level Corolla can accelerate from 0-100 km / h (0-62 miles per hour) in 9.2 seconds, which is 1.7 seconds less than its predecessor, maintaining the same average CO2 emissions of 102 g / km. The 2.0-liter hybrid produces 193 hp (146 kW / 196 PS), which is 15 hp (12 kW / 16 PS) more than before. Here, 0-100 km / h (0-62 miles per hour) acceleration takes 7.5 seconds (-0.5 seconds), where the average C02 emission of 107 g / km (-2 g / km) decreases slightly.
In addition to the advanced specs, Toyota engineers have adapted the hybrid control unit to the driver’s purpose for more normal and linear acceleration. A slow powertrain is created as the engine slows down during acceleration.
Light design update, more technology inside the cabin
The facelifted corolla looks virtually unchanged to the trained eye. However, there are a few variations on the grille mesh pattern and fog light bezels, as well as three new color options (Juniper Blue for hatchback and touring sports, midlight teal for sedans and metallic gray for three) and new alloy wheels. In addition, the high-end trims of the hatchback and Turing Sports feature dual-LED headlights with an adaptive high-beam system (AHS). For the GR Sport, it benefits from a new set of 18-inch machined alloy wheels, a sportier rear bumper and refreshed seats.
Inside, Toyota is offering new trim and upholstery options for a more contemporary environment. On the tech front, there’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that offers four modes, from mid-level trim to standard, – casual, smart, sport and tough. It combines the larger 10.5-inch infotainment touchscreen from the Corolla Cross, which combines cloud-based navigation and a new voice agent. The latter can recognize normal conversation requests and even open or close windows.

In addition, the Toyota T-Mate package includes the latest Toyota Safety Sense with the new and improved ADAS, which has a tendency to over-the-air software updates. Finally, drivers have access to remote services through the MyT app.
The facelifted Toyota Corolla Range (hatchback, sedan, Turing Sports) will be available in Europe in the first quarter of 2023. Toyota will announce the price of the model near launch in the market.
