Remember the Zagato Mostro which was unveiled in 2015 with a Maserati V8 engine and limited production of five units? Well, exactly seven years later, the Italian design house returns to Villa d’Est with an open-top sibling, the Masterati, driven by the Mostro Barchetta Jagato.
The Barchetta looks almost like the regular Mostro, but it’s not a bad thing since the retro-scented design inspired by the 1957 Masrati 450S coupe Jagato is nicely outdated. In addition to the absence of a roof that does a great job of increasing the proportions, the Barchetta comes with a newly designed rear deck and retains the rest of the heavy sculpted body panels.

The world has moved on since 2015, so Zagato is offering a choice of two Maserati-powered powertrains for the 2022 model. You might have the best-sounding naturally ambitious 4.2-liter V8 that produces 414 hp (309 kW / 420 PS), or the new biturbo 3.0-liter V6 from the MC20 that produces a more impressive 621 hp (463 kW / 630PS). . )
In both cases the engine is mounted in the front-midship position, allowing 50/50 weight distribution for a 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) vehicle. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a racing-style six-speed manual sequential transmission that is mounted on the front block, where there is no electronic traction control.
The Mostro Bacheta is based on a carbon-fiber monocell chassis, a composite structure for the windscreen frame and a steel rear subframe carrying rear suspension, exhaust and fuel tanks. The front and rear double-wishbone suspension has a pushrod that works on adjustable shock absorbers while 19-inch single-nut alloy wheels conceal AP racing brakes on composite tires (255/40 R19 front and 295/35 R19 rear). Like the closed-roof Mostro, the Mostro Barcheta Jagato will be produced in five units. The first example was displayed at Villa D’Est before being delivered to its owner.
