Michigan Startup to Provide BMW with 600-Mile, Dual-Chemistry Battery


Our Next Energy (ONE), a Michigan-based startup, announced today that it has signed an agreement with BMW to include its Gemini dual-chemistry batteries in a prototype version of the iX.

ONE founder and CEO Mujib Ijaz said, “We are thrilled to work with BMW to showcase our Gemini long-range battery technology to our customers. “As EV adoption increases, drivers are learning that real-world situations can significantly reduce their battery performance.”

ONE’s dual-chemistry batteries combine two types of cells, some designed to retain better power and others to deliver better power. By doing this, the whole battery pack can provide better range when using less hard-to-source materials.

The startup claims that its battery technology will be able to give the BMW iX a range of 600 miles (966 km) while using 20 percent less lithium and 60 percent less graphite and reducing the use of nickel and cobalt compared to conventional batteries. It further claims that it reduces the tendency of batteries to escape heat, which means they are also safe.

In fact, in December, ONE recovered its Gemini batteries in a Tesla Model S and was able to achieve a range of 752 miles (1,210 km) in a real-world driving scene. Now, the goal is to start moving technology towards production.

“We’re on a path where every part of the puzzle needed to understand a production program is what we’re doing and discussing with them,” Ijaz told Automotive News. “It’s about how it gets to market, and what we see in BMW’s vision, what bridges we have to cross, how the product works on energy, power and cost, and whether we can keep it in production. From a manufacturing perspective with familiar technology. “

The company is now looking at sites for a cell factory in the United States that could produce both its mesh base battery and the Gemini long-range battery.

BMW’s tie-up with ONE follows its lead in the recent 65 million funding round. The automaker’s venture capital arm, BMW i Ventures, was behind the investment, which ultimately led to the deal.
