BMW brought its 2023 M4 CSL to the prestigious Villa d’Este event in northern Italy this weekend, making the car the first public broadcast since details were published online last week.
Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este has become a regular feature on BMW’s launch calendar, the brand has previously used the event to showcase numerous road cars and concepts, including the 2016 BMW 2002 Homage. And as another snap of conventional auto shows, BMW looks set to follow suit with the worldwide release of the M3 Turing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June.
Unlike Goodwood, the event at Villa D’Est doesn’t give the showgoers a chance to get angry and watch the car go by, but at least it has plenty of opportunities for fans (and photographers) to get a closer look at the details as well as park it. Separate a CSL from a regular M4.

Among these details is our favorite new “BMW laser” lighting technology, which debuted on the rear lights of the CSL, followed by the yellow daytime running lights closely. But the red badge outline, the rear docktail spoiler and the Carbon Center console all work hard to get your attention. CSL is also available in black or white, but BMW chose to show an example in the same frozen gray as seen in the original press image.
Many of the changes focus on 221 pound (100 kg) carb weight loss, including the removal of the rear seats, trunk trim and floor mats, while using carbon fiber for the hood and trunk and titanium for extraction. The twin turbocharges of the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six boost further, and although the unit itself looks a bit different, the huge aluminum cross brace sits on top of it and attaches to the shock towers will definitely show some respect when you open the hood at a car show.
BMW says it produces 3,583 lbs (1,625 kg) of CSL at 543bhp (550 PS), 40 bhp (40 PS) more than the typical M4 competition coupe, and can accelerate to 62 km (010 mph) if the launch control of the eight-speed automatic gearbox is activated. / D) 3.7 seconds. This makes it 0.2 seconds faster than a stock M4 competition coupe, but 0.2 seconds slower than the xDrive all-wheel drive version of the same.
Some credit for CSL’s extra dig of the line must go to the sticky Michelin Cup 2R tires, which also play a key role in CSL’s ability to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife at 7: 20.2, a BMW road car record. The modern track-centric rubber is miles better than the Michelin Pilot Cup sports 20 years ago which made the original M3 CSL awesome for driving in heavy rain, but customers who want extra reassurance can switch to conventional tires at no cost.
The BMW M4 is making just 1,000 instances of the CSL, and at the $ 139,900 plus $ 995 destination they’ve slashed a huge premium on regular $ 74,900 M4 races, and it’s assumed you’ll be able to hold one in the MSRP. But even at that price, we think enough BMW fans would want one that would be hard to find just one order. Even if you don’t manage it, the images of yellow and green non-CSL M4 competition cars in the gallery below are a reminder that a stock M4 (and the possibility of saving $ 65k) is still a strong temptation.
