This is the brand new 2023 X1, Bavarian company’s entry-level SUV – or BMW-Spike “Compact Sports Activity Vehicle”. They say compact, but the new car has grown in every direction for a model that has significantly increased itself since its introduction as an E90-Turing-based crossover.
In addition to the newer, sharper exterior and screen-filled cabin, at least for the US market, the X1 will eliminate its front-wheel-drive powertrain. All X1s sold in the US will feature the standard xDrive, aka All-Wheel Drive, a single 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine available at launch. In other regions, an all-electric iX1 variant is set for sale at a later date, but is not expected to reach the states.

Avoid going for the out-and-out cheese-greater-style of the new X1 X7 and opt for two almost-square kidney grills instead. These are still huge, make no mistake, but we suspect that the X7 and XM attacks mentioned above have somewhat reduced our outlook.
On the profile and front, the X1 is seen as the monkey of its X3 and X5 brothers, with a chiseled bottom chin and inverted-L light signature. The waistline is tapped in a fashion that touches more dramatically than her siblings, while the bottom edge is covered in black plastic.
Moving backwards, the roof line is extended by a distinctly extended spoiler hanging on a narrow rear window. It may not be everyone’s choice, but with a low-profile roof rail and side air deflector, the 2023 X1’s Cd is a respectable 0.27.

All in all, the overall ratio indicates purpose. The rear wheel arches, in particular, are clearer than ever, with the ever-present Hofmeister Kink যদিও although the chances of anyone considering the X1 as a performance car or a light off-roader are virtually nil.
But while the fairer look is initially unnecessary, the new design seems to be at least more suitable for passengers, with BMW claiming a significant increase in shoulder and elbow compartments for front and rear seat occupants.
Extended interior space is down for the growth of the new X1 in partially all areas. It is 1.7 inches (43 mm) long, 177.2 inches (4,400 mm), 0.9 inches (22.9 mm) wide, 72.6 inches (1844.04 mm) and 1.7 inches (43 mm) long, 64.6 inches, 640 mm (1). The 2023 model has a wheelbase of 106 inches (2692.4 mm), 0.9 inches (22.9 mm) longer than before, while track width has increased by 0.8 inches (20.3 mm) to 62.3 inches (1582.42) front and rear.
There are also new colors, including Blue Bay Lagoon, Cape York Green, Utah Orange, Space Silver, and BMW Individual Frozen Pure Gray. The wheels are a standard 18-inch, but 19- and 20-inch options are also available.

Current and accurate is BMW’s iDrive operating system 8, which focuses on touch and control, which we think is another way to break the bad news for fans of the physical buttons.
A slightly surprising feature of the interior of the 2023 BMW X1 is its handling of mobile phone storage. On the center console, there is provision for charging your device wirelessly – there is nothing out of the ordinary. The head-scratching element is introduced with a clamp that keeps the phone upright and visible to the driver and front passenger. While older model owners may prefer to use their mobile phones for navigation and multimedia via phone mounts, these are usually mounted on top of the dashboard so that your eyes do not stray off the road.

Many modern cars incorporate CarPlay or Android Auto and eliminate the need for a phone to be visible. Why BMW decided to keep the phone holder too low in the cockpit – not just out of sight of the road driver, behind the two cupholders – is amazing. They even highlight that this feature is designed to keep the mobile device visible to the driver.
Phone storage aside, there are lots of other QBs that can be used to accommodate items. The practicality is extended by four USB-C ports as well as a 12V power socket in both the center console and the cargo area and standard ambient lighting. BMW has a plethora of technical features, including Alexa-style assistants, augmented view maps, OTA updates, a digital key and even an internal camera. The camera can be accessed via the BMW app to check the status of the vehicle while you are away or can be used to take snapshots of people on the go.
However, fans of the time-proven method of managing your transmission will be disappointed. The X1 drops a traditional gear stick for a toggle-style gear selector. There are other function switches with selectors as well as volume controls – it’s best not to mix them.
An engine to rule them all (in America)
The 2023 X1 xDrive28i comes with a modified 4-cylinder 2.0-liter engine. It now includes a Miller combustion cycle, which keeps the intake valve open during certain parts of the compression stroke, allowing compression to occur against turbo pressure instead of the piston. Also, there is a new dual (direct and port) injection system and a modified combustion chamber geometry.
The engine now produces 241 hp (245 PS / 183 kW) at 4,500-6,500 rpm and the torque is increased to 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) at 1,500-4,000 rpm. Combined with a 7-speed DCT, the X1 can reach 0-60 mph (0-96 km / h) in 6.2 seconds.
Powered by four wheels, and the gearbox is optimized to better accommodate your route topography. This means it will hold the gear if you are going uphill and the coast will be up if you are going downhill. M Sport package-equipped vehicles receive a pedal shifter, with a “sport boost” function that optimizes powertrain and chassis settings in addition to the standard 18-inch wheel for “probably instant acceleration”, or optionally available 19-inch and the first. It is often impossible to get through a BMW press release without mentioning the subject car sports intent. However, although the X1 is the brand’s entry-level crossover, that claim may have more credibility than eye-catching – and not just because the front-wheel drive configuration has been compromised.
