The DeLorean Alpha5 is a low-slung electric GT with glowing doors

DeLorean Motor Company’s brand new model was set for a digital launch on May 31 after several teasers, but the automaker first released the first pictures and information via anticipation through the official website, with anyone signing up for news and updates. The DeLorean Alpha5, written by Italdesign as its predecessor, is a low-slung four-seater Grand Tour with huge gallows doors and a fully electric powertrain.

Stay clean from retro design references, keep glowing doors

The return of the DeLorean nameplate contains less design references to the iconic DMC-12 than we initially expected. The aerodynamic body (0.23 cd) is much more curved than the original boxy size, while the featured windowline has been replaced by a more modern greenhouse. Still, the Alpha 5 respects the tradition of sleek doors with mostly profiles, large diameter multispoke wheels, a simple character line around bodywork, and a vented rear windscreen cover.

On the front, the thin LED headlights blend in with the DeLorean symbol-carrying grille instead of the usual DMC badge on older cars. Both bumpers have an illuminated V-shaped component, a prominent splitter at the front and a large diffuser at the rear.

The tail has full-width taillights with three horizontal lines, which serve as a loose representation of the DMC-12 taillight pattern. Speaking of LEDs, the glowing doors have illuminated patches on the front and back, which makes them more visible when opened.

The DeLorean Alpha5 has a rather large footprint, measuring 4,995 mm (196.7 inches) long, 2,044 mm (80.5 inches) wide and only 1,370 mm (53.9 inches) long, with a wheelbase of 2,300 inches (90.).

A grand tour with a four-seater cabin

The sheer size of the Gulwing door allows easy access to the cabin, which has four separate seats with plenty of support and a high-mounted center tunnel. The dashboard is marked by a simple line of focus points behind a digital instrument cluster modern styled flat-bottom steering wheel.

The Floating Center console has a second and smaller touchscreen screen for infotainment, and behind it appears to be a set of physical controls next to a wireless charging tray for air conditioning. We can see two cap holders and more storage bogies for the front passengers.

EV powertrain with 300-mile range

DeLorean did not provide a detailed presentation of our platform – perhaps the EVX modular architecture developed by Italdesign and Williams Advanced Engineering – but did announce some approximate specific figures for the “Base Performance Model”. A large 100 kWh battery is good for a range of more than 300 miles (483 km). We do not know the output of electric motors but Alpha5 will accelerate from 0-97 km / h (0-60 mph) in 2.99 seconds and from 0-142 km / h (0-88 mph) in 4.35 seconds. The maximum speed will be 250 km / h (155 mph).

We’ll learn more about DeLorean Alpha5 at the digital launch tomorrow and at the official premiere scheduled for August 18 at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegans. The reincarnation Delorian Motor Company is owned by Liverpool-born engineer Stephen Wayne, headquartered in Humble, Texas. We expect that Alpha5 will be produced in limited numbers, although at the time of writing there is no word on price and availability.
